Medical Testimony is a Challenge

Taking down technical testimony can be challenging for brand new or less experienced court reporters. Medical terminology in particular can be difficult because not only is the reporter hearing new words that are not in their dictionaries, the speaker is usually very familiar with them.

Are Court Reporters Only In Court?

Court reporters take down verbatim conversations and proceedings both inside and outside of the legal world. While some of what they do is outside of the courthouse, their primary clients are attorneys that request a variety of court reporting services.

On television shows, court reporters are always depicted as the person taking down testimony in a court trial. While legal testimony is one forum where they are found, they also provide verbatim transcription of many other types of proceedings that have nothing to do with a courtroom.

Every few years, one or two more states entertain the idea of converting their court systems from court officials or stenographers to sophisticated digital recording systems that will keep a record of all proceedings.

During a legal deposition or court proceeding, court reporters sometimes interrupt the witness or the attorneys when they are speaking. While some people may think they are being rude or annoying, the truth is, they are simply doing their job.
