With the aim to promote safety on Toronto roadways the Ministry of Transportation establishes and thus implements strict rules and regulations to be obeyed by all the drivers. On committing any kind of violation against Toronto traffic laws a driver is charged with traffic tickets or/and suspension of the driving license. The amount of penalty carried by the Toronto traffic ticket depends on the severity of the committed offence.

Apart from the penalty which is due to be paid, your traffic violation will be marked on a driving record as a fixed number of demerit points. The number of demerit points directly depends on the severity of the offence and is defined by the court but not the police officer. To put it another way, your driving record is an exact description of your behavior on the road. The better you drive less demerit points you have and vice versa.

The Ministry of Transportations defines a certain number of demerit points associated with different offences as follows:

Backing on highway - 2
Seatbelt offences - 2
Improper right/left turn - 2
Prohibited turns - 2
Pedestrian crossover -2
Failing to signal - 2
Unnecessary slow driving - 2
Improper opening of vehicle door - 2
Failing to obey signs under regulation 182 - 1
Drive prohibited lane - 3
Failing to obey directions of police officer - 3
Driving or operating a vehicle on a closed highway - 3
Failing to report an accident - 3
Improper passing - 3
Following too closely - 4
Exceeding speed limit by 16 to 29 km/h - 3
Exceeding speed limit
by 30 to 49 km/h - 4
Exceeding speed limit by 50 km/h or more - 6
Stunt driving: Exceeding speed limit by 50 km/h or more - 7
Racing - 7
Failing to remain on scene of accident - 7

If the number of demerit points exceeds the limit you will have to attend an interview with the Ministry of Transportation. Here you can find information on how the number of demerit points on your driving record can impact the state of your driving license in Toronto.

6 demerit points - you will get a warning letter from Ministry of transportation in the mail. 9 demerit points - you will have to attend the interview with the Ministry of Transportation. The interview is compulsory and ignorant attitude will automatically cause your license suspension.

To avoid that you will need to produce clear explanations of your past driving experience and give solid reasons your license shouldn't be suspended. On this stage you may be asked to go through a driver re-examination. This includes road, vision and knowledge tests. These tests will help to assess whether you can drive safely and carefully. If you fail these tests your license will be automatically cancelled.

15 demerit points - your license will be suspended for 30 days from the day you surrender your license. You can decide whether you want to surrender your license at any Driver & Vehicle License Issuing Office or Ministry of Transportation. Both options are possible. In case you refuse to surrender your license, suspension period will be prolonged up to 2 years. As soon as suspension term is over the number of demerit points will be cut down to seven. Any extra points you happen to get at this time will cause one more interview with the Ministry of Transportation.
