This article shows the reasons on why having a copyright registered is vital.

The lawful beginnings of people legally going to register copyright works was April 1, 1989. Since then, millions of works have been registered so that they may not be copied or duplicated without legal expressed permission from the person who owns the rights to that work. If you have ever come across something and not been sure if it has gone through register copyright proceedings, you need to be safe and not sorry it should always be assumed that something is protected by copyright law unless it has been proven otherwise. Failure to acknowledge a copyright could mean big trouble for you and heavy fines in addition to court time and lawsuits. Unfortunately, the number of infringement lawsuits is on the rise these days and currently is at an all time high.

When works are protected by a copyright, it is a form of intellectual property that reserves royalties and acknowledgements of the work to the original creator for a specified amount of time. The creator of an original work is granted exclusive rights for a certain time period for the work, and this includes distribution, publication and adaptation. Did you know that after a specified amount of time, the rights to works expire (so to speak) and that work then becomes public domain? This type of protection applies to any expressible form of an idea or information that is substantive and discrete. Some places recognize moral rights of the creator of a work, such as the right to be credited for the work. However, this is not recognized universally.

The intent of register copyright proceedings is to allow inventors, writers and artists to have control of and profit from their works, encouraging them to create new works and to aid the flow of ideas and learning. There are many different companies that can be found locally or on the Internet that can offer legal contracts and information that covers every aspect of protecting different types of works legally, and they can do it all using the Internet. There are copyright attorneys available who specialize in this area of law, so if you need assistance or you are involved one way or another in any infringement litigation, a copyright attorney can help.

There are some websites who are able to file everything that is needed to register copyright works for you for a fee. All you do is register as a member of the website, you would upload or mail in your work to be registered, and you would in return receive a unique number to identify that work. The company records the register copyright date and in the event that legal evidence would be needed for any litigation, the company would be able to produce that, too.
