Injured bin man receives compensation
A bin man has successfully won close to £60,000 in compensation after he sustained a personal injury to his shoulder.
The member of the trade union, UNISON had tripped on a raised paving slab in July 2005, while working for Stevenage Borough Council.
The 55-year-old, who lives with his wife in Stevenage, was collecting the recycling boxes in Archer Road, when he fell badly on his left knee, shoulder and elbow.
The man had to have two operations on his shoulder, took 15 months off work as well as having to be unable to complete a number of activities, including heavy lifting and swimming.
The man has since had to take a lesser-paid job driving a road sweeper due to his disabilities.
The man who is also a grandfather was awarded with compensation, from Hertfordshire County Council at Luton Crown Court.
He said: "I am pleased to have been awarded compensation, but the injury has been extremely painful and has changed my life dramatically. After the accident I had keyhole surgery, but this did not work, so I had to have painful open surgery.
Hit financially
"My wife has been left to lift her disabled mother on her own, I am unable to take my grandson to our regular swimming sessions and I have had to give up golf.
"I also had to stop my recycling duties and take a lesser-paid job driving a road sweeper, which has hit me financially."
Phil Wood, UNISON's Regional Secretary in the South East region, said: "It is only right that received compensation for the pain that he has suffered. This accident could so easily have been prevented.
"Sadly, he will continue to suffer as he is unable to do things he took for granted before, like playing with his grandson. And he has been forced to take a job that pays him less.
"
Rachel Bayliss, from the legal firm which represented the man, said: "Hertfordshire County Council has a responsibility to ensure its pavement and highways are in good order.
"The council failed to maintain and repair this pavement and, as a result, the man suffered a nasty fall. It had a huge impact on his life and, most dramatically, on his employment opportunities." The injured bin man received £57,000 in compensation after the injury
In another incident, a Surrey-based bin man suffered serious leg injuries in a collision with a car in Hersham.
The victim, believed to be in his 60s, was on his way to The Archway cafe by Hersham Train Station when the accident involving him and a blue Jaguar XJ occurred about on February 7 at 8.30am.
Crushed between cars
A witness to the accident, said: "It seemed like the car had skidded on ice. The victim was crushed between the car and a parked car. His leg injuries were really bad."
Surrey Air Ambulance were called to the scene and landed in the car park near Walton Park about 8.55am to help paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service.
The injured man was employed by Elmbridge Council contractors Veolia, a firm which cleans roads and collects waste.
A spokesman from the firm stated: "One of our waste management and recycling staff was involved in a serious accident whilst carrying out his duties.
"Whilst on the pavement he was struck by a car that had skidded on black ice close to the nearby railway bridge. We would like to express our sympathy and support to both him and his family."
The man was treated for serious personal injuries to his leg and taken by land ambulance to St Peter's Hospital, Chertsey, but the driver of the Jaguar was not injured.
A spokesman for Elmbridge Council said: "Our thoughts and sympathies are with him and we wish him a rapid recovery after this dreadful accident."
