Most people have driven under the influence of alcohol before, but few have thought of the penalties for doing so. For example did you know that approximately 13,000 people die every year from drunk driving? And over 85% of DUI's end up as a full conviction. Also, most convicted DUI offenders have a mandatory ignition interlock device attached to the car.
Drunken driving incidents are so common that national organizations have been created to prevent it from happening. Just like the NAACP is to colored people, the MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is to drunk driving. Approximately every year since 2005 there has been over 13,000 drunken driving incidents resulting in a death(s). Drivers are now held responsible for the damages they cost from there accident. Whether it is criminal punishment, or fines, the penalty is far worse then the thrill of driving drunk. Even though laws from state to state are not the same, they are similar.
A full conviction in most states for a first time delinquent is a lengthy license suspension, and a few nights in jail. Almost all of the 50 states have passed Habitual Violator Laws, which takes away many civil rights of three time DUI offenders. For example, losing your ability to own a weapon or vote. In addition you will lose your drivers license permanently for many, many years.
Before you are convicted you go through an interview to determine the extent of your drinking problem. The interview determines when you will be reinstated your drivers license depending on how serious your problem is. In addition many states have passed new laws that make jail time mandatory for repeat offenders.
A new way to prevent people from driving drunk is to place an ignition interlock device on the offender's car. The system works by having the driver breathe into the device, if the blood alcohol content level is over .02% or .04% then the car will not start. Also, at random times will the engine is on the device will require you to breathe into it. The purpose of this is to prevent a friend from breathing in the device, to allow the intoxicated person drive the car.
If the sample isn't provided, or if it exceeds the limit on the device, then the event is logged, the driver is warned, and then an alarm starts, until the ignition is turned off. This can be extremely embarrassing if you are with your friends, and they have to watch you breathe into a tube on your dashboard. Aside from the embarrassment from your friends, you will also have to pay for the device, instillation, and the maintenance for it. Typically all of these things will cost the offender $75 a month.
Driving under the influence may provide a quick high for you and your friends, but once you get caught, or get in an accident you'll wish you never got in the car. Dying, getting convicted, and being embarrassed in front of your friends for breathing into an ignition device are only some of the consequences from driving under the influence.
