The oil spill that was caused when one of BP's wells exploded went on for months. Even to this day, the scientist that are studying this disaster, do not know exactly how much oil was released into the ocean. In addition, they do not know where all of the oil is at now.
Some of the oil could have been taken by the currents far out into the Gulf of Mexico, and will return someday when a big storm hits. Other specialists that are trying to find all of the oil so that it can be cleaned up believe that there are still large amounts of it on the ocean floor.
If either of these scenarios is correct, the oil could be polluting these once very lucrative fishing grounds for many years to come in the future. Can you imagine being a fisherman that depends on the seafood in this part of the ocean to make your living and feed your family?
While BP has paid out certain claims to the fisherman, many more have been denied for no good reason at all. In addition, when BP first started paying out claims, they were offering pennies on the dollar for what the claim was actually worth.
BP's strategy was that since these people had lost everything and did not even have enough money to survive, they would buy them out cheaply. Certain fisherman were forced to take ridiculous payouts of their BP claims, because they had no choice. It was either t
hat, or send the children to bed without any food.
Not only were the fisherman treated unfairly by BP, virtually every business in the area received the same treatment. Examples of these types of establishments are hotels, restaurants, construction companies, and dock owners.
After the oil spill, BP went out and hired the most expensive lawyers that they could find that are experts at denying claims. These attorneys then pulled out every law book ever written, and used every loophole that they could find to reject claims.
To make matters even worse, when a claim was finally approved, they then attempted to negotiate the payment down to nothing. If a business owner did not accept their offer, in many instances they did not get paid anything at all, even though their claim was lawful.
Today, BP believes that the payment of the claims because of the oil spill is coming to an end soon. They think that since the oil is no longer leaking, there is no longer any damage being done to the environment. Because of this, the people and businesses in this area should no longer be suffering financially.
If you or somebody that you know, has had their BP claim either denied, or settled for virtually nothing, you do still have alternatives. It is still possible for you to collect what is legally and morally owed to you. Please keep your head up and keep trying, and maybe, just maybe, you will turn out to be one of the fortunate ones.
